Spicy Sweet Stir Fry & Dipping Sauce

Some sauces earn a permanent place in your fridge — the ones you reach for when dinner needs a little lift or when you want something bold without a lot of fuss. This Spicy Sweet Stir Fry & Dipping Sauce is exactly that kind of recipe. It’s quick, balanced, and full of warm, familiar flavors inspired by the sweet‑heat harmony found in so many Asian kitchens.

Sweet spicy stir‑fry and dipping sauce served with crispy tofu, dumplings, and fresh vegetables.

And honestly? It has the potential to replace a few of those bottled sauces you buy out of habit. The flavor is deep, the ingredients are simple, and you can adjust the heat and sweetness to fit whatever you’re cooking. Once you make it a couple of times, it becomes one of those “why don’t I always make this?” staples — the kind that makes weeknight cooking feel a little more special.

Ingredients

Bottles of soy sauce, chili sauce, and maple syrup with small bowls of seasoning for a sweet and spicy stir-fry dipping sauce
  • Tamari, or low-sodium soy sauce adds deep savory richness that anchors all the sweet and spicy flavors.
  • Rice vinegar brings bright acidity that keeps the sauce lively and balanced.
  • Maple syrup gives gentle sweetness and a warm, rounded finish.
  • Ginger is the lively backbone you taste in so many Asian-inspired dishes.
  • Garlic deepens the sauce and makes it feel familiar.
  • Allspice adds warm, subtle sweetness that ties the heat and maple together, echoing the aromatics of five‑spice.
  • Cornstarch + water thickens the sauce just enough to help it cling to whatever you’re cooking.
  • Green onion adds a pop of flavor at the end, and looks pretty too.
  • Serrano or jalapeño adds gentle heat for those of you who like a little spice.

How to Use This Sauce

This sauce is wonderfully flexible. Try it as:

  • A stir‑fry sauce for chicken, tofu, shrimp, or veggies
  • A dipping sauce for dumplings, spring rolls, or crispy bites
  • A finishing drizzle over rice bowls, noodles, or roasted vegetables

It’s a cozy, weeknight‑friendly staple that works with almost anything.

Serves Perfectly With…

  • Crispy wok tofu clings beautifully to the edges and adds sweet‑spicy depth.
  • Quick weeknight pan-seared chicken that takes on the glossy stir-fry of takeout.
  • Take veggie stir‑fries to the next level — it makes broccoli, snap peas, carrots, and even cabbage shine with a burst of flavor.
  • Thinned out and with a splash of sesame oil, this turns into the perfect dipping sauce for dumplings or potstickers.
  • Drizzle over warm rice bowls with your favorite veggies and a protein for an easy, weeknight meal.
  • Toss with udon, ramen, or rice noodles for a quick, flavorful bowl.

Equipment

Ingredients

Stir Fry and Drizzle Sauce (base)

  • 1/2 cup tamari or low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1-2 teaspoons finely grated ginger to taste
  • 1 large garlic clove, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 small serrano or jalapeño pepper, thinly sliced seeded
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon water

Dipping Sauce

  • 1/4 cup stir-fry & drizzle sauce
  • 1-2 tablespoons water
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds

Garnish

  • 1 stalk green onion, thinly sliced don't skip
  • 1 teaspoon chili oil optional
  • 1/2 teaspoon sriracha

Instructions

Stir Fry & Drizzle Sauce

  • In a small saucepan over medium heat, add soy sauce, vinegar, maple syrup, ginger, garlic, and allspice powder. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer.
  • In a small bowl, whisk cornstarch with water, then whisk it into the sauce. Simmer for 2 minutes, until lightly thickened.
  • Remove from the heat, then add the serrano or jalapeño pepper.
  • I prefer tamari because its sodium level falls between that of regular soy sauce and low‑sodium soy sauce, giving the sauce great flavor without being overly salty. If you only have regular soy sauce, reduce it to 1/3 cup and add water to reach 1/2 cup.

Dipping Sauce

  • Mix the stir-fry sauce, water, sesame oil, and sesame seeds in a small mixing bowl.

Garnish

  • Garnish with green onion, sriracha, or chili oil to your taste.

Notes

Making the dipping sauce is more of an art than an exact science, depending on how much of the base recipe you use. Don’t be afraid to adjust it according to your taste.
