Seasonal Hard Candy Duo (Holiday & Summer Blends)

There’s something timeless about homemade hard candy — the sparkle, the crack, the way a single piece can transport you straight into a memory. I’ve adapted my mom’s classic holiday hard candy recipe into a single base that now gives me two seasonal favorites: the traditional Holiday Hard Candy Blend and a bright, sunny Summer Fruit Blend.

Colorful pieces of assorted hard candy coated in powdered sugar, arranged closely together.

Every December, my mom made the original candy — warming flavors filling the house with color, sweetness, and pure Christmas joy. She shared it with friends and neighbors, turning a simple recipe into a tradition rooted in generosity. Expanding it with a Summer Fruit Blend lets me carry that same homemade sweetness into the sunny months.

Ingredients

This recipe is simple, nostalgic, and endlessly adaptable. The base stays the same — sugar, corn syrup, water — and the magic comes from your flavor oils and colors. Whether you’re leaning into holiday warmth or bright summer fruit, the result is glossy candy that breaks into bright, irregular pieces. The LorAnn flavors I have used…

  • Holiday Hard Candy Blend: A double batch of cinnamon, and single batches I have used are of anise, butter rum, butterscotch, clove, English toffee, pecan, peppermint, pralines & cream, and maple.
  • Summer Fruit Blend: blueberry, cherry, green apple, peach, pear, pomegranate, orange cream, strawberry, and watermelon.

Full ingredient list and instructions are in the recipe card below.

Before you begin- working with 300°F sugar

This recipe is wonderfully straightforward, but it does require a bit of attention and a few smart prep steps to keep everything smooth, safe, and stress‑free. Hard candy reaches 300°F, which means we’re working with extremely hot sugar syrup — beautiful, but not forgiving. With the right setup, though, you’ll feel confident and totally in control.

  • Have your flavoring oils pre‑opened and ready — once the syrup hits 300°F, you’ll need to move quickly.
  • Use oven mitts or heat-resistant gloves—the steam and bubbles can surprise you.
  • Choose heat‑safe tools like silicone spatulas and metal spoon rests.
  • Never taste test the syrup — even a tiny drop can cause a serious burn.
  • Keep kids and pets out of the kitchen during the pour.
  • Pour carefully — the syrup spreads fast and stays hot longer than you think.

Once the candy begins to firm up, use a pizza cutter to score it into your desired piece sizes. Once fully hardened, break along the scored lines and toss the pieces in confectioners’ sugar to keep them from sticking.
